Anatomical Venus

Anatomical Venus is an anatomical dummy model for medical education, made in Italy in the 1700s. They are looking somewhere with half-closed empty eyes. At the same time being opened the stomach, and it has white skin like marble, luxuriant hair and wears various types of jewellery and fancy dress.

I felt some weird feelings when I saw it and I thought it can be a creepy example of ʻMale gazeʼ. ʻAnatomical Venusʼ has a strong ʻVisual disconnectionʼ which means a strange and unfamiliar sight created by two visual themes of different levels.

I made three posters with following images, ʼLa nascita di Venereʼ painted by Sandro Botticelli, Ophelia by John Everett Millais, ʼThe most beautiful suicideʼ Photo by Robert Wiles.

ʼLa nascita di Venereʼ is the Representative works related to Venus. In addition, My question was Why is Venus's naked body visible to the public without being covered by clothing? ʼOpheliaʼ is not only the starting point of my work but also an emblem of tragic death of a beautiful woman. At the same time, ʼThe most beautiful suicideʼ is a perfect example of public's excessive interest in beautiful dead women.
